How Long Will the Tribulation Last?

Question:

I have always been taught that there will be seven years of Tribulation. Where in the Bible does it mention seven years of Tribulation?

Response:

The Bible speaks of a seven year period during the end time which begins with the antichrist signing a covenant with many people (presumably Israel), has the "abomination of desolation" right in the middle and ends with the return of Jesus Christ. This time period is known as Daniel's Seventieth Week and is found in Daniel 9:27 (see also, Daniel's Seventy Weeks). Jesus called the second half of this period the "Great Tribulation" in Matt. 24:21 (see also Matt. 24:9 & Rev. 7:14). The Bible only refers to this second half as a time of tribulation. Jesus seemed to refer to the first half as "the beginning of labor pains" (Matt. 24:8). Today, however, people commonly refer to the entire 7 year period as the tribulation, or tribulation period. The Bible is very clear that the tribulation will only last 3 1/2 years (Dan. 7:25; 12:6-7, 11; Rev. 13:5, 7, also compare Dan. 9:27 with Matt. 24:15, 21 and see Rev. 11:2, 3; 12:6, 14).
